The mind can play tricks sometimes... I have had clients who have kept a time management log for a few days and have been amazed at how much time they spend on unimportant email and phone calls. They thought they were just spending 30 minutes a day on these types of tasks but their time logs indicated they were spending up to 150 minutes a day. Immediately they went from missing deadlines and not getting things done to feeling more in control of their work and disruptions. A time management log takes about 5 minutes a day BUT gives you an objective measure of your use of time. This enables you to boost your time management skills. It gives you a benchmark to set time management goals to reduce various time-wasters in your life. Do you plan your work and then work your plan? One of the characteristics of successful people is the ability to plan their work and then ensure that that work gets done. Whether it is a goal setting plan for 2 years into the future or a monthly plan of how you are going to reach your deadline, having a plan focuses your attention. Most people's work revolves around weekly activities - this is why it can be good to have a plan that is at the weekly level. A weekly plan gives an overall view of what you need to get through, any bottlenecks in activity (where you may want to practice your delegation skills), and allows you to funnel down into a daily to do list. I provide a weekly plan but I also find that most personal organizers and time management planners do the job. Whether you are a business professional, a work-at-home parent, or a student; a weekly plan allows you to develop a time management schedule and put your time management strategies to work.
