How good is your student time management?

Attention Students

As a student, I often felt I had too much to do and not enough time!

I know that I wasn't alone - many of my classmates were burning the candle at both ends.

Feel pressured with too much to do left me with some pretty stark options of lengthening my day (usually by sleeping less), reducing my workload, or becoming more efficient in my habits.

Through trial and error, and commitment to change, I chose the last option.

Since then, I have read hundreds of books on the subject, received a PhD, and work as a university lecturer, registered psychologist, and time management consultant in some of the biggest firms in the country.

Wearing these different hats, I often find myself helping well-intentioned people with their time management skills.

Typical symptoms of poor time management for students may include:

  • feeling stressed and overwhelmed by a lack of time
  • studying at hours when you are not fresh and productive
  • procrastinating
  • cramming the night before
  • not getting assignments in on time.

Poor time management can be stressful!

As a student you are juggling many different responsibilities - study, work, and social life.

Student time management reduces your stress and boosts your productivity.

Why not take our student time management survey? Get a score for your time management skills and identify the areas that time management strategies can be put in place.

Student time management is about having clear goals, staying on top of your work and other responsibilities, and using your time effectively to get the most out of being a student.

Our mission is to give you the skills to reduce your stress and overcome procrastination by using time management techniques to achieve more with less.

What are your time robbers?

Often students feel stressed and overwhelmed with the amount of work they need to do. This is often a good indication that time management can help.

But often a question I get is "Where do I start with my student time management?"

There are a couple of options here.

  1. You can take the student time management quiz and see how good your student time management is and refine those areas that can be improved.
  2. You may choose to start with a time management and students time log that objectively assesses how you spend your time.

The adage that "You can’t fix an issue until you can identify it" rings true for student time management.

Once you know how you spend your time, you then may work on eliminating time-wasters and becoming more effective.

The tyranny of the urgent and the stressed-out student

Part of student life is juggling the many demands on your time - work, academic study, and social life, to name a few.

However, knowing which tasks to do first is critical for college students who don't have enough time.

Often, these tasks need to be ordered in terms of priority.

This means that you need to set priorities BUT many students confuse urgent with important.

This can be a cause of stress and reduce grades!

This time management activity is useful to organize your priorities and time.

College Time Management Activity

After you have tracked your time with a time log you can conduct this time management activity for students.

How do you use your time? Are you a student who is methodical and planned or do you leave assignments to the last minute?

Examine your time management for students matrix and see where you can reduce your stress and get more things done.

Overcoming procrastination

When you fill out your time log you may notice that you are spending time on tasks that are less important than others that have yet to be done.

Perhaps you are spending time on Facebook or surfing the net for hours - when an assignment is due tomorrow?

Probably the biggest time-waster that students face is procrastination.

If I had a dollar for the number of times I have convinced myself to put that 'must do' task off until tomorrow I would be a rich man.

Facebook...Internet...even washing the dirty dishes - all have been used as a form of procrastination when study needs to be done.

The procrastination habit is like a comfortable bed - easy to get into but difficult to get out of.

Often being aware that you are procrastinating and examining the causes of procrastination is the quickest way to beat procrastination.

I talk more about the ways that students can overcome procrastination with these college time management tips.

Prioritize and plan with student planners

By planning your work and then working your plan, you avoid the trap of last minute cramming sessions and stressful write-ups of assignments the night before.

This is a win-win situation for time management students.

You reduce your stress, increase the quality of your study, and improve your grades!

But the benefits extend beyond college and study as time management is a transferable skill that is valued by employers.

So how do you set up a time management plan?

time management for students

Planning Starts with Identifying What is Important to You

As a student, this is likely to include getting good grades, enjoying student life, and personal development.

Having a goal creates a bridge between today's dreams and tomorrow's reality.

Student goal setting clarifies your priorities so that you can start to develop your plan.

As a student, it is important to first get an overall view of your semester. This involves developing a semester plan.

Record your lessons, assignment due dates, and any other assessment or exam dates in your semester plan.

This should give you an overview of your commitments for the semester.

A semester plan highlights any bottle necks of intense periods of assignments and assessments. This lets you know when 'all hands should be on deck.'

Translate your semester plan into a weekly plan.

Developing a weekly plan of your work and then working your plan is essential for student success.

Download your free weekly planner at student planners and start planning your work and working your plan!

Planning and prioritizing gives you a greater sense of control, improves time management, and boosts confidence.

Plan your work, work your plan

Whether you are an elite athlete, a top business professional or a great student, any success started with small steps and then building on those successes.

Big Rocks, Little Rocks

Without planning you are not likely to complete those important tasks that you really need to get done.

They get crowded out by other things!

The importance of planning and scheduling cannot be overemphasized.

This Big Rocks Little Rocks exercise of a time management college professor highlights the importance of student planning.

Daily habits of success are an important building block of any student time management system.

One way that you can start today is to develop a prioritized time management students to do list that you use on a daily basis.

A 'to do' list is simple and effective.

As a time management tool, the 'to do' list in probably one of the easiest methods to increase personal effectiveness.

Here we give you three important steps that you need to take to maximize your chances of student success.

Study techniques

Studying effectively is not an all-night cram session the day before the exam.

Nor is it chaining yourself to a desk for 12 hours straight, day in and day out!

Being a student involves readings, attending lectures and tutorials, and participating throughout the semester.

One important student time management tip is being able to plan and manage the new information.

This involves keeping up-to-date with readings and being an active contributor to your learning experience.

One part of academic performance is being able to connect and relate facts with larger patterns of knowledge, and then communicating them in your own words.

Here we provide a set of proven study techniques that maximize your retention and overall performance.
