Reduce distractions for teen time management

by Anonymous

For good teen time management it is important to reduce distractions.

If you are working on something don't just stop and look at FaceBook or text your friends. Finish the task at hand first.

Kell's reply: Thank you so much for your comment. I think the impact of distractions on teen time management (and all time management) is huge.

With so much technology and competing demands for our attention, remaining focused on what you are doing, whether it is homework or an assignment is important for getting things done.

There has been some interesting fMRI research lately, in which researchers look at the blood flow to different areas of the brain. What they have found is that distractions result in the brain turning off and then turning back on again to concentrate on the new task (the distraction), and then once the distraction is dealt with, it turns back off and then back on to focus on the new task.

What this research shows (which is in the area of multitasking) is that this is a really inefficient way to use the brain's energy.

It is much better to focus on a single task until it is completed before you devote yourself to another task.

The take-home message for good time management is to protect your time. When you block time to do something then turn off the email, instant messages, phone, etc and concentrate single-mindedly on what you are doing.
