I am stressed out and need time management to become more relaxed.

by Alex
(NY)

I am at college and often get overloaded with homework. Basically my life revolves around school, if I am not at school then I am at home doing homework. I have no time for myself anymore. It is making me stressed and exhausted (I can never fall asleep at night)

I want to know how I can get things done more quickly and become more relaxed.

Kell's reply: Thanks for your post Alex. It can be a vicious cycle - the feeling of being overwhelmed and stressed and as a result feeling exhausted - which is further fuel for that overwhelmed feeling.

While many people will tell you take reduce stress through relaxation strategies, this will just help you to cope with stress.

These are good skills to have and well worth your while to learn.

But relaxation strategies to cope with stress won't get to the core of your issue - feeling overwhelmed with too much to do and not enough time.

Good student time management skills that involve planning your semester, and then your week; along with excellent focus (and minimal distractions) while studying will ensure that you are getting quality time on your subjects.

While quality time is important, to maintain this, you need to be able to factor in adequate periods of rest and recuperation into your time management schedule. This may include time for yourself, relaxation exercises to counter stress, or the pursuit of a hobby.

By having a clear roadmap of your work, when your busy periods are, and the positive reinforcement of adequate rest (or hobby), you are much better equipped to manage that feeling of overwhelm.

Best,
Kell
