Clutter Tips to Feel Good About Yourself and the Place that You Live.

One of the goals of removing clutter is to feel good about yourself and the place that you live.

But this is often not enough.

What you need is a clear vision of what you want and what your house will look like in that vision.

If you focus on getting rid of stuff you will not get organized.

But by focusing on what you want and the relationship between you and your space (rather than the quantity of stuff) you can really make some permanent change in your habits.

Clutter can occur at many levels.

You can declutter your life, create more space at home or conquer the mountain of papers on your desk or in the office, or organize the garage or streamline your closet.

Imagine how good it will feel to have an organized home and life - and know where your things are.

These decluttering tips will help you to declutter any area of your life.

Have a vision.

Before decluttering ask yourself what you would like your house, desk, or life to look like.

What is your vision?

Having a vision allows you to make choices about the objects "Does this item move me closer to the that vision of the life that I want". If it moves you closer, keep it; if not then what is it doing here?

Have a plan.

This occurs on two levels. First think ask yourself "What do you want to use this space for?" Have a clear idea of how you want this space to look after you have decluttered.

Second, set aside some time to declutter. This can be as little as 10 minutes a day.

I suggest that you start small, so that you avoid feeling overwhelmed with the task ahead of you. For example, if you want to declutter a room, choose one surface and tackle that. Or if it is a desk, start with a drawer.

Set yourself a task and complete it.

Write down what you want to declutter. Break down your tasks so that you can keep your decluttering tasks specific.

Don't stop halfway - try to complete the task.

I have found that starting with small helps you to build on your successes and develop the motivation to keep on decluttering.

Have a place for everything and everything in its place. This clutter principle means that each item that you decide to keep has a deliberate and purposeful existence to help you to achieve vision that you are building towards.

Praise yourself.

Often our hardest task masters are ourselves - if this is true then reverse it and praise yourself for a job well done.

Enjoy the space and freedom that you have created - this is one of the long-term benefits that you can get from clearing clutter.
